Archery Opener is 46 Days Away

Practicing archery regularly is essential when preparing for an elk hunt in Montana. Consistent shooting from varying distances builds muscle memory and improves accuracy, which are critical when tracking and harvesting elk in challenging terrain. Focus on perfecting your form, controlling your breathing, and maintaining steady aim under different weather conditions. Additionally, incorporate scouting and physical conditioning to handle the demanding landscape of Montana. Proper preparation ensures confidence and effectiveness, increasing the chances of a successful archery elk hunt.

BOW & ARROWS *Make sure your bow is tuned, arrows are in good condition, and you have extras. We recommend a heavier-weight arrow over a lightweight one (somewhere in the 500-600 total arrow weight). We also recommend Iron Will broadheads, but any fixed-blade broadhead will work fine. We DO NOT recommend mechanical broadheads. Practice with your setup and be proficient up to 60 yards.

  • BOW SLING! This is an ESSENTIAL item. You must use a bow sling when riding horseback for comfort to and from locations.

To get into Montana mountain shape, focus on building a strong cardiovascular base combined with leg and core strength. Incorporate hiking with a loaded backpack to simulate trail conditions and improve endurance. Trail running or interval training helps increase stamina and lung capacity for high-altitude exertion. Strength training, especially squats and lunges, develops the muscles needed to tackle steep and uneven terrain. Don’t forget to acclimate gradually to altitude by spending time at elevation before attempting strenuous climbs. Proper hydration, nutrition, and rest are crucial for supporting your training and preventing injury.
